A UK Guide to the Direct-Supply Route
Most people assume going solar means signing up with one company that supplies and fits everything as a single package. But there is another route that is growing fast in the UK: buying your equipment directly from an authorised dealer and arranging installation separately. It gives you more control over the components, the quality and the cost. Here is how the direct-supply route works, and what to consider before you take it.
Why buy equipment directly? With a traditional installer package, you take whatever panels, inverter and battery that company chooses to stock — and the equipment cost is bundled invisibly into one quote.
- Component choice: Buying direct means you pick the brands — the exact panels, inverter and battery — rather than being limited to one installer's range.
- Transparent pricing: You see exactly what the hardware costs and what the labour costs, separately.
- No lock-in: You are not tied to a single company's stock, lead times or markup.
This route suits two groups especially well:
- Off-grid and vehicle conversions: For campervans, motorhomes, boats, cabins and remote builds, there is often no grid connection involved at all — so a self-supply approach is the natural choice. (See our guide to solar power for motorhomes and campervans.)
- Homeowners managing their own project: If you are comfortable coordinating trades, you can source the equipment and bring in your own qualified installer.
Do you still need a qualified installer? For a grid-connected home system: yes. Any solar and battery system that connects to the UK grid must be installed by a suitably qualified electrician, and for the installation to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee it must be MCS-certified. The good news is that nothing stops you from supplying your own equipment and hiring an MCS-certified installer to fit and certify it — many will happily do exactly that.
For a purely off-grid system with no grid connection (a campervan, a remote cabin, a boat), the rules are different and a self-install is often perfectly feasible, provided the DC and AC work is done safely and to standard.
The paperwork: G98 and G99 If your system connects to the grid, your installer must notify or apply to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO):
- G98 is a simpler notification process for smaller systems (broadly up to 3.68kW per phase).
- G99 is a full application required for larger systems, which must be approved before the system is commissioned.

A sensible step-by-step
- Work out your system size based on your roof, energy use and goals.
- Check your supply type — single-phase or three-phase — so you buy the right inverter.
- Choose and order your equipment from an authorised dealer (so warranties are valid and genuine).
- Find an MCS-certified installer willing to fit customer-supplied equipment, and confirm they will handle MCS certification and the DNO application.
- Register for SEG once you have your MCS certificate and smart meter.
