Plug-In Solar in the UK: What Changes on 27 August 2026?

Plug-in solar is about to become a genuine option for households in Great Britain.
From 27 August 2026, new regulations create a legal route for compliant plug-in solar products to be supplied and used in Great Britain. The change could make small-scale solar generation accessible to people who cannot install a conventional rooftop system, including some renters, flat owners and households with limited roof space.
But plug-in solar is not simply a case of buying any small solar panel online and connecting it to a wall socket.
There are important technical, safety and grid requirements that consumers should understand.
What Is Plug-In Solar?
A plug-in solar system is a small photovoltaic system designed to feed solar-generated electricity into a household electrical circuit through a standard UK mains socket.
A typical system includes:
- one or more solar PV modules;
- a grid-connected microinverter;
- manufacturer-supplied cables and connectors;
- a compliant UK plug;
- and a suitable mounting system.
Rather than supplying a separate off-grid circuit, the electricity generated is used alongside electricity from the grid.

What Changes on 27 August 2026?
Until now, existing UK electrical and plug standards have prevented plug-in generation equipment from having a straightforward legal route to market.
The new regulations change that.
Compliant plug-in solar products will be able to use a standard UK plug when they meet the required product and electrical safety framework.
The government has also introduced an Interim Product Specification specifically for plug-in solar.
This specification covers areas including:
- electrical safety;
- inverter behaviour;
- anti-islanding protection;
- cables and connectors;
- weather protection;
- mounting systems;
- fire safety;
- product labelling;
- and grid compatibility.
The important word here is compliant.
The regulatory change does not mean that every balcony solar kit already available from overseas marketplaces automatically becomes suitable for use in the UK.
The 800 VA Limit
The current UK specification limits a plug-in solar device to a maximum apparent AC output of 800 VA.
The solar panels themselves may have a higher combined DC rating because panels rarely operate at their laboratory-rated output throughout the day. The microinverter controls the amount of electricity supplied to the household circuit.
For consumers, this means plug-in solar is designed as a relatively small supplementary source of electricity rather than a replacement for a conventional multi-kilowatt rooftop solar installation.
How Many Plug-In Solar Systems Can You Use?
The technical specification allows one compliant device on an eligible household circuit, but current G98 network connection requirements initially limit installation to one plug-in solar device per household.
That position could change if G98 is amended in the future.
Consumers should therefore follow the current manufacturer, network operator and government guidance rather than assuming that several plug-in systems can simply be connected around a property.
Grid Notification Still Matters
Plug-in solar may be simpler than a conventional rooftop installation, but it still operates in parallel with the electricity distribution network.
Products must satisfy the relevant G98 requirements, and compliant devices are expected to be identifiable through the Energy Networks Association Type Test Register.
Consumers will also need to follow the relevant Distribution Network Operator notification or registration process.
This is an important distinction between plug-in solar and an isolated off-grid solar system.
What About Batteries?
The initial plug-in solar framework does not cover plug-in battery systems or plug-in solar products integrated with batteries.
A conventional home battery connected as part of a professionally designed solar or storage installation is therefore a different category of system.
Consumers should be cautious of products advertised as though the new plug-in solar rules automatically allow batteries to be connected through a household socket.
They do not.
Is Plug-In Solar Suitable for Flats and Renters?
Potentially, and this could be one of the technology's most interesting applications.
Small panels may be suitable for balconies, terraces, gardens, sheds or other outdoor spaces where a conventional rooftop array is impractical.
However, electrical rules are only one part of the picture.
Depending on the property, consumers may also need to consider:
- landlord permission;
- freeholder or leasehold restrictions;
- building management rules;
- planning requirements;
- safe structural mounting;
- shading;
- and the condition of the existing electrical installation.
A plug-in product does not automatically give permission to attach panels to a balcony, wall or shared building structure.
Plug-In Solar vs Conventional Rooftop Solar
The two technologies serve different purposes.
A conventional rooftop system can typically provide several kilowatts of generation and can be designed alongside hybrid inverters, battery storage, EV charging and export arrangements.
Plug-in solar has a much lower entry point.
Its main attraction is simplicity and accessibility.
For someone using electricity during daylight hours, even a relatively small amount of local solar generation can reduce grid consumption.
For households looking for significant annual generation, battery integration or greater energy independence, a conventional rooftop system will usually remain the more capable option.
What Should Buyers Check?
As the new market develops, consumers should avoid choosing a product based only on panel wattage or price.
Before purchasing, check:
- that the product is specifically approved for the UK plug-in solar framework;
- that the inverter complies with the applicable G98 requirements;
- that the complete product meets the UK Interim Product Specification;
- that the supplied mounting arrangement is suitable for the intended location;
- whether the property requires landlord, freeholder or planning consent;
- whether the existing electrical installation is suitable; and
- what DNO notification or registration is required.
If there is uncertainty about the condition of the household wiring, consumer unit or protective devices, seeking advice from a qualified electrician is sensible.
A New Entry Point Into Solar
Plug-in solar will not replace conventional rooftop PV, but it could open solar generation to a much wider group of people.
For households previously excluded because of cost, tenancy, roof access or limited space, the introduction of a regulated plug-in solar market is an important development.
